Ask most people to name a Black inventor and you'll get two, maybe three names. George Washington Carver. Maybe Garrett Morgan if they paid attention in class. Perhaps a vague memory of someone connected to the traffic light.
That's not a knowledge problem. It's a curriculum problem.
The real list is enormous. Black inventors and innovators have been reshaping daily life for over two centuries — through the filament inside your lightbulb, the shoe on your foot, the cardiac surgery techniques that save hearts today, and the train safety systems that kept passengers alive before anyone thought to give credit. Most of their names never made it into the standard history books. Some had patents filed in their names. Some had patents filed under someone else's name. Some died before anyone got around to saying thank you. But start here. Eight inventors. Eight stories. All of them true, most of them undertold.
In July 1916, an explosion ripped through a tunnel beneath Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio. Workers were trapped hundreds of feet underground, surrounded by smoke, gas, and darkness. Rescue teams went in and didn't come back. Then Garrett Morgan showed up with a device he'd invented a few years earlier — a breathing hood designed to filter smoke and allow someone to breathe in hazardous air. He went into the tunnel. He pulled people out. He made multiple trips.
Morgan had already patented his Safety Hood in 1914, and his invention would later evolve into the gas mask used by U.S. soldiers in World War I. He didn't stop there. In 1923 he patented a three-position traffic signal — the predecessor to every modern stoplight. Before his signal, intersections were a gamble. His T-shaped design introduced a third position (essentially "caution") that gave pedestrians and drivers time to clear before traffic resumed.
After his role in the Lake Erie rescue was publicized, some white-owned businesses in the South refused to buy his traffic signals once they learned the inventor was Black. Morgan sold the patent to General Electric for $40,000. The signals went everywhere. His name went nowhere for decades.
Most people know Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. What most people don't know is that Edison's early bulbs burned out in hours. The invention that made electric light practical — a longer-lasting carbon filament — was developed by Lewis Latimer, a self-taught engineer who had previously worked as a draftsman for Alexander Graham Bell and helped draft the patent drawings for the telephone.
Latimer joined Edison's team in the 1880s and became one of the few Black members of the "Edison Pioneers," the elite group of engineers who built the electrical age. He supervised the installation of electric light systems in New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, and London. He wrote the first book on electric lighting. He held patents in his own name.
He was born to freedom in Massachusetts after his father escaped slavery in Virginia. He taught himself mechanical drawing. He worked his way into rooms where almost no one looked like him and left those rooms fundamentally changed. The lightbulb that lit the 20th century ran on his improvements. Edison got the monuments. Latimer got the footnote.
In 1915, Alice Ball was 23 years old, a Black woman completing her master's degree in chemistry at the College of Hawaii. She was already the first woman and first African American to receive a chemistry degree from that institution. She was also, quietly, solving one of the most stubborn medical problems of the era.
Leprosy patients at the time were treated with chaulmoogra oil — an ancient remedy that didn't absorb well and left patients in agony. Ball developed a water-soluble injectable extract that actually worked. Her method, called the "Ball Method," became the standard treatment for leprosy for the next two decades.
Ball died in 1916 at 24, likely from chlorine gas exposure during a lab accident. After her death, the college president who oversaw her work published the findings himself, without crediting her. A colleague named Arthur Dean continued refining the process and named it the "Dean Method." It took until 2000 — 84 years after her death — for the University of Hawaii to formally acknowledge her contribution. The state of Hawaii now celebrates Alice Ball Day every February 28.
She solved a disease. She was erased. History eventually found her anyway.
Granville T. Woods held over 50 patents in electrical engineering, more than almost any inventor of his era. He invented the induction telegraph, a device that allowed moving trains to communicate with stations — a breakthrough that dramatically reduced train collisions at a time when rail accidents killed thousands of people per year. He invented an improved telephone transmitter. He invented an egg incubator that could hatch 50,000 eggs at a time. He held patents in railway braking systems that are direct ancestors of the ABS brakes on modern vehicles.
Both Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell claimed that their own prior work superseded his patents. Both challenged him in court. Both lost. Edison, reportedly, tried to hire him twice after losing. Woods turned him down both times.
Despite winning his patent cases and generating enormous value for the telegraph and railroad industries, Woods died in 1910 nearly broke. Defending patents in court was expensive. The companies that used his inventions had better lawyers and deeper pockets. He spent his later years fighting legal battles instead of filing new patents.
His name appears in almost no standard history of electrical engineering. His work runs underneath almost all of it.
On July 9, 1893, a man named James Cornish was brought to Provident Hospital in Chicago with a knife wound close to his heart. The conventional medical wisdom of the time was clear: don't touch it. Surgery near the heart was fatal. Cornish was expected to die.
Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the hospital's founder, opened Cornish's chest, repaired the wound to the pericardium — the sac surrounding the heart — and closed him up. Cornish recovered. He lived for another 50 years. Williams had just performed what is widely considered the first successful open-heart surgery in American history.
Williams had founded Provident Hospital in 1891 as the first non-segregated hospital in the United States, one that would also train Black nurses and physicians who were shut out of white medical institutions. In 1894, he was appointed surgeon-in-chief of Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C., and transformed it into a nationally respected teaching facility.
He was inducted into the American College of Surgeons in 1913 — one of its first Black members. His name belongs in every conversation about modern cardiac medicine. It rarely shows up in one.
Before Jan Ernst Matzeliger, every shoe was hand-lasted — meaning a skilled craftsman had to manually shape the leather upper around the sole and tack it in place. It took experienced cobblers up to 50 shoes a day. It was skilled, time-intensive labor, and shoe prices reflected it.
Matzeliger, the son of a Dutch engineer and a Surinamese woman, arrived in the United States in the 1870s and ended up working at a shoe factory in Lynn, Massachusetts. He spent years — working nights, teaching himself English, using library books to study mechanical engineering — building a machine that could perform every step of the lasting process automatically. He was denied membership in several churches because of his race. He kept working.
In 1883, he received a patent for the Lasting Machine. It could produce 150 to 700 pairs of shoes per day. It cut shoe prices in half. It made shoes accessible to people who'd previously owned one pair their whole lives. It transformed Lynn, Massachusetts into the shoe capital of the world.
Matzeliger died of tuberculosis at 37, before he could see the full scope of what his invention unleashed. He had no heirs and left most of his estate to the church that had actually accepted him. The United Shoe Machinery Company bought his patents and became one of the most valuable manufacturing companies in the country. His face appeared on a U.S. postage stamp in 1991.
Otis Boykin grew up in Dallas, Texas, graduated from Fisk University, and spent his career doing something unsexy but essential: improving electrical resistors, the components that regulate current in electronic devices. He held 26 patents. His innovations made resistors cheaper, more reliable, and resistant to extreme temperature changes.
In 1964 he invented a control unit for artificial cardiac pacemakers — a precision wire resistor that allowed the pacemaker to send controlled electrical pulses to a failing heart. His invention helped make pacemakers practical and affordable. An estimated 78 million people worldwide have received pacemakers since the technology became widespread. Every one of them carries a debt to a man whose name most of them will never know.
The final irony: Otis Boykin died in 1982 from heart failure.
His contributions were largely unrecognized during his lifetime. His patents lived on in every device that came after him.
Sarah Boone was born into slavery in 1832 in North Carolina. After Emancipation, she settled in New Haven, Connecticut, and in 1892 became one of the first Black women in the United States to receive a patent.
Her invention: an improved ironing board. The boards that existed at the time were wide, flat, and poorly designed for the curved seams and sleeve shapes of women's garments. Boone's design narrowed the board, curved it to fit sleeves and shirt bodies precisely, and made ironing significantly more effective. It's the design that every modern ironing board — the shape in every laundry room and garment shop today — descends from.
Her patent was granted. Her name attached to it. And then the design became so common, so obviously useful, that it passed into standard use without anyone tracking where it came from. That's a particular kind of erasure — not outright theft, but absorption. The invention survives. The inventor disappears.
It's tempting to treat each of these stories as an individual tragedy — a person overlooked, a credit stolen, a name dropped from the record. But eight profiles tell a pattern, not a coincidence.
The patent system was technically open to Black inventors after the Civil War, but navigating it required literacy, money, legal access, and professional networks that were actively denied to most Black Americans. Companies that purchased or stole patents had lawyers on retainer. Independent inventors, Black or white, were at a disadvantage — but Black inventors faced that disadvantage stacked on top of segregation, professional exclusion, and a publishing and education system that had little interest in preserving their contributions.
History gets written by the people who control the presses, the curriculum committees, and the institutions that decide what counts as worth remembering. That's not a conspiracy. It's just how institutions work when left unexamined. The good news is that examining it isn't hard — it just takes someone deciding to look.
